6 Best Herbal Face Wash Options for Oily Acne Prone Skin in India

best herbal face wash for oily acne prone skin in India

best herbal face wash for oily acne prone skin

This is a compilation of some of the best Indian herbal / natural / ayurvedic face wash options for combination or oily acne prone skin. These Indian herbal face washes (for men and women) can be used for maintenance of pimple prone skin. Keep in mind just a face wash may not be enough to cure a severe form of acne.

The problem with herbal or natural face washes in India is that a lot of them do not disclose the whole list of ingredients. Another problem is the base used for formulating the face wash. A base is the underlying cream or gel formula in which active ingredients are suspended. Even if a natural face wash contains the right ingredients such as tea tree oil, neem or whatever else, if it is not formulated in a non-comedogenic base, it will cause pimples instead of curing them. This is a major reason natural products fail to work for a lot of people.

This list has been carefully compiled keeping in mind a variety of factors involved in managing an oily acne prone skin. It is nonetheless advisable to do a patch test on part of your face before using them on the whole face. The list is in no particular order.

Also see our recommendations for best face wash for oily acne prone skin in India which lists a mix of herbal and non-herbal face wash options for oily/combination skin.

FabIndia Tea Tree Face Wash

fabindia-tea-tree-facewashEven though FabIndia is notorious for pimple-causing products, this face wash is surprisingly devoid of comedogenic (pimple-causing) ingredients.

At a price of Rs. 165 for 120 ml, it is pretty economical as well.

Ingredients: water, sodium lauryl ether sulphate, cocoamidopropylbetaine, sodium chloride, tea tree oil, salicylic acid, guar gum, turmeric extract, citric acid

Aroma Magic Mint Cleanser

aroma magic mint cleanser for acne pimplesAlmost a cult favourite, this lightweight cleanser with a creamy consistency can help mild to moderate cases of pimples. Active ingredients include extracts of peppermint, spearmint, clove, neem and essential oils of rose, geranium and tea tree. This cleanser does not leave the skin dry or stretchy. It is suited for skin that is not overly oily.

Aroma Magic Neem and Tea Tree Facewash

While their mint cleanser is a creamy cleaner that can be wiped off the skin, this neem and tea tree face wash is more like, well, a face wash. It is free of SLS, parabens, alcohol, artificial colouring and fragrance – substances that can cause skin irritation and worsen acne. This face wash leaves skin squeaky clean, so it is suited for those with extra oily skin. It has the right ingredients for preventing acne while healing any existing pimples.

Vedic Line Neem and Brahmi Disinfecting Face Wash

vedic line neem face wash gelBrahmi (gotu kola) and neem oil form the main anti-acne ingredients of this face wash. That is not its main distinction though. The cool thing is that this budget face wash, unlike many of the more expensive herbal face washes, does not contain ingredients that can aggravate pimples. Rs. 125 for 120 ml. There is a smaller 50 ml pack for Rs. 70.

Ingredients: water, neem oil, brahmi / gotu kola, tea tree oil, camphor, sodium lauryl ether sulphate, sodium chloride, sodium benzoate.

Another variant is Vedic Line Charcoal Disinfecting & Face Wash.

Lotus Herbals TeaTreeWash

With tea tree oil, cinnamon and oak bark as active ingredients, this face wash claims to control oil and provide anti-acne protection without drying out the skin.

Khadi Acne and Pimple Powder Clean Skin

himalaya-purifying-neemThis is a break from all the tea tree stuff we have been listing. It is in powder form and boasts of a unique formulation of herbs like Santra (orange), Jaipphal (nutmeg), Manjeetha, Lodhra, Gulab (rose), Tulsi (holy basil), Haldi (turmeric) and Neem which have anti-inflammatory and cooling properties which help in reducing acne from skin surface.

Patanjali Saundarya Face Wash

The label says all the right things and the ingredient list sounds perfect – orange peel, neem, tulsi and aloe vera. Although not directly formulated for oily acne prone skin, this face wash can be a good choice for daily maintenance of oily acne prone skin. Patanjali products like face wash, aloe vera gel etc. are available in general stores as well. You do not need to look for a Patanjali Chikitsalaya for buying their cosmetic products.

Himalya Herbals Purifying Neem Facewash

With neem and turmeric as the active ingredients, this could be a good choice for you if you get occasional pimples. It is also available as a foaming face wash.

The problem with Lotus Herbals products is that many of them do not show a full ingredient list, including Teatreewash. It is possible something in it is irritating your skin. It is best to discontinue instead of giving it the benefit of the doubt and further harming your skin.

Thank you Deepika for sharing your experience. It will help others too.

Hi Dipika, what are you currently using to wash your face then? Did your doctor give a reason why not to use a face wash? Are you not allowed to use Patanjali Saundarya face wash even?

I have heard that there are some pranayam breathing exercises and ayurvedic herbs that reduce internal body heat. Since you are already consulting a Patanjali doctor, I guess she will be the best guide in this case.

Hi Dipika, since you are consulting a doctor who you trust and her recommendations are benefiting you, my suggestion would be to continue with her. Definitely ask her about this redness and also if any of the the medications might be causing it. If you did not have redness before you started her medicines, then she has to be answerable about this. Good luck!

Deepika, as I mentioned earlier, it is best you talk to your doctor before using any new products. For sensitive skin, it is best that a doctor look at the skin and suggest suitable products. I’m sorry but anything I suggest in this case may backfire.

Hiya Nerd, I’ve used the Aroma Magic Mint Cleanser and it didn’t break me out, which was a miracle. If you are in the market for “safe”, “herbal” cleansers and considering these, think again. Almost none of the herbal cleansers reveal the full ingredient list. Himalaya Herbals products are full of parabens and what not. Aroma Magic Mint Cleanser only lists active ingredients. Ditto Patanjali.

Out of these, FabIndia Tea Tree Face Wash is safe both acne-wish and chemicals-wise, but it can be very very drying as you will see from its reviews in the reviews section. One truly herbal face wash I’m liking these days is Kama Body Cleanser. It is an herbal dust basically, which you mix with water and wash your face with. It is somewhat scrubby, but leaves my APST 3 skin smooth, glowing and plump which is a feat. It’s there in the reviews section if you want to know more about it. It isn’t enough to remove sunscreen, but works well as a morning cleanser.
