Retinoids are the gold standard when it comes to fine lines and wrinkles. They also help immensely with acne – so it is a double treat.

While precription retinoids such as Retino-A require careful skin care, their milder cousin retinol is better tolerated while being slightly less effective.

Eye creams suitable for acne prone skin:

1. Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Eye Cream (retinol based)

2. Olay Regenerist Eye Lifting Serum (peptides)

Another effective eye cream is Sebamed Age Defence Lifting Eye Cream (Co-enzyme Q10), but it contains shea butter, avocado and almond oils – all very likely to cause breakouts.

Eye creams invariably contain oils and emollients that travel down to the rest of the face. This results in acne eruptions in acne prone parts of the face. So you need a non-comedogenic eye cream even if you don’t get pimples right around the eyes.

One way to prevent this invisible trickle of eye cream to the cheeks and nose is to first apply your acne treatment or night cream (retinol) all over the face leaving the eye socket clean. Then wash hands, dab a very small amount (that’s all that is needed anyway) around the eye socket bone. Your face night cream will form a barrier to prevent the downward trickle of the eye cream. If the face is left bare, the eye cream will trickle down more to the dry, bare cheeks.

Creams with glycolic acid like glyco 6 don’t help with fine lines around the eyes ?

Glycolic acid is good for skin resurfacing – it exfoliates the top layer of the skin. So whatever treatments you use on top of it, it makes them penetrate and work better. Retinol works under the skin, thickening the skin, which is responsible for wrinkle reduction.

If am using glyco 6 as a night cream, is it ok to use the creams you have mentioned ( Neutrogena or Olay) as under eye creams ?

Yugard can be used if your skin is tolerating it well – you should not see excessive peeling around the eyes. Eye creams with retinol also contain emollients that provide additional moisture to the eye area.

Yes it should be fine, you’re not applying them on top of each other.

I have a bottle of Neutrogena rapid wrinkle repair night cream. Can I use it around the eyes? I haven’t used it since I brought it due to worries that it might break me out.
