Suncote Gel Review

Suncote gel sunscreen for acne pimplesSuncote Gel SPF 30 is a water based sunscreen made by Curatio, a pharmaceutical company in India. Suncote sunscreen lotion is actually a translucent gel. In this review, you will find answers to common questions about Suncote Gel.

Suncote ingredients

Water, Octylmethoxycinnamate (7.5%), Triethanolamine, Avobenzone (2%), Phenylbenzimidazole Sulphonic Acid (2%), Isononyl Isononanoate, Acrylates /C10-30 Alkyl Acrylates Crosspolymer, Tocopheryl Acetate, Diazolidinyl Urea, DMDM Hydantoin, Perfume, BHT, CI 16255

Suncote Gel benefits

Suncote Gel provides UVA and UVB protection against sun’s rays preventing skin darkening / tanning, skin cancer and photo-aging.

Where to buy Suncote Gel?

You can buy Suncote at Indian medical stores. The price of Suncote gel is Rs. 249 for a 100 gm tube.

Does Suncote protect against both UVA and UVB rays?

Suncote is a broad spectrum chemical sunscreen. Avobenzone provides UVA protection. Octylmethoxycinnamate and Phenylbenzimidazole Sulphonic Acid provide UVB protection.

How to apply Suncote Gel

Take a big pea size amount and apply liberally to cover the face and neck. If the face looks white immediately after, wait for the sunscreen to sink into the skin instead of rubbing it in vigorously. Apply sunscreen about 15 minutes before sun exposure so that all of it can absorb into the skin. Reapply every 2-3 hours if you are outdoors or sweating.

Does Suncote Gel leave a white cast?

Suncote gel works fine for dark complexions. If this sunscreen gel does not absorb right after applying, wait a few minutes and it will sink into the skin without leaving a white cast.

Does Suncote Gel reduce dark marks? Does Suncote Gel prevent skin tanning / darkening?

It prevents further darkening of the skin due to sun’s rays. There are no skin lightening ingredients in it as such.

Can Suncote Gel be used by men?

Yes Suncote Gel can be used by men. The SPF amount is good enough for Indian weather and outdoor use.

Is Suncote sunscreen suitable for oily skin?

Suncote is an oil-free sunscreen. It is does not cause sweating but can sometimes make the face look shiny. It does not have any special ingredients to keep the face matte though. If the shine bothers you, Lotus Herbals UV Screen Matte Look Gel is an alternative.

Does Suncote Gel cause pimples? Is it good for acne prone skin?

With no significantly comedogenic ingredients, Suncote is safe for acne prone skin and will most likely not cause breakouts. It is routinely prescribed by dermatologists for acne prone skin.

Can Suncote sunscreen be used daily?

Yes, and it should be used daily. Apply it every day, 15 minutes before you step out of the house.

Is Suncote sunscreen SPF sufficient for Indian summers?

Although there are higher SPF sunscreens available in the market, beyond a point say SPF 30, any increase in SPF factor makes minimal difference. So yes, Suncote is good enough for Indian summers.

Hi, does it really prevent skin tanning / darkening ? How is this possible if it does not contain Titanium Oxide and Zinc and the SPF is only 30 ?

Zinc oxide is an excellent physical sunblock ingredient that blocks both UVA (sun tan) and UVB (sunburn) rays. But it is not the only one. Also, zinc based sunblocks can leave a heavy white cast on brown skin. Same for titanium oxide.

Suncote is a combination of UVA and UVB blocking ingredients that provide good all round protection without a white cast.

While higher SPFs give better protection, SPF 30 keeps out 97 percent and SPF 50 keeps out 98 percent of UVB rays. So after a point, it makes little difference even if you increase the SPF a lot.

Thanks for your questions Maxwell. Keep them coming!

    Hi Editor,

Does this combination work out for an acne prone oily facial skin with large pores and many dark spots?
    (1) Cetaphil Cleansing Lotion before applying Glyco6
    (2) Glyco6 at night
    (3) Suncote Gel SPF 30 in the morning time

    Thank you!

    Hi,
The Suncote Gel is said that is anti tanning but the SPF is only 30. However there are other anti-tanning sunscreen with higher SPF. Does it mean that those anti tanning suncreens with higher SPF protect you more against tanning / darkening than those with SPF 30?

Did you read the answers to your previous question on this same page and this one?

    • Maxwell March 31, 2013 at 12:18 pm #

Yes I did, but I still have a little doubt. So regardless the SPF factor, what really matters in the sunscreen to prevent skin tanning / darkening is the UVA protectio level right? Like P+++, or INDEX 20, someting like that right?

      Yes, that’s right.

Hello, what is the amount of protection from UVA rays ? There is no indication on the package about it. How you know if the projection against UVA is higher or less ?

The amount of UVA protection Suncote provides (2% avobenzone) corresponds to PA++ rating of UVA protection.

    Greetings Acne Mantra

A friend of mine told me that I should use some after sun lotion after being exposed to the sun. S he told me that these lakme face wash + gel are very good:

1 Lakme Sun Expert After Sun Lightening Face Wash
2 Lakme Sun Expert Skin Lightening De Tan Afther Sun Face gel

However I have oily skin, will these products suit on my oily skin face ? Or you suggest any other ?

      AM April 11, 2013 at 1:49 am #

Looking at Lakme Sun Expert After Sun Lightening Face Wash, none of the ingredients stand out as particularly comedoegnic, so you should be fine using this for oily / acne prone skin.

Lakme Sun Expert Skin Lightening De Tan Afther Sun Face Gel has been shown to block pores. As an alternative to Lakme Sun Expert Skin Lightening De Tan After Sun Face Gel, you could use Aroma Magic Hydro Gel. The gel base in Aroma Magic’s Hydro Gel is aloe vera instead of the possibly pore clogging gel base in Lakme. The skin lightening action of Lakme is in part due to lactic acid, which is also present in Aroma Magic’s Hydro Gel. So you’re getting the same gel consistency (with aloe being actually useful for the skin) plus skin lightening with the same ingredient (lactic acid). Definitely do a patch test on part of the face before using Hydro Gel all over.

      Yes

  8. Amisha April 26, 2013 at 12:07 pm #

According to the post and previous comments this Suncote Gel has a P++ factor and is anti-tanning.. but if I use another sunscreen with P+++, will it give me more protection against tanning ?

    • Avatar of AM
      AM April 27, 2013 at 12:40 am #

The Protection Grade of UVA (PA) is based on a system that measures skin tanning on exposure to the sun. So yes, PA+++ will give higher protection against tanning than PA++.

Hello. My dermatologist has told me not to use any sunscreen and use only acnelak soap twice a day, clindac a gel once in the morning and retino – a 0.025% at bedtime. I am really tensed as I got to know from the net and the leaflet inside retino a that you really have to use suncreen. And I have been getting pimples when i started to use retino a. I have used it for 3 days. Is suncote gel safe for me while using retino a ?

    • Avatar of AM
      AM May 7, 2013 at 2:32 pm #

Retino-A can sometimes cause an “initial breakout” which is supposed to be bringing up the acne that was lurking under the surface of the skin. Retino-A will not immediately stop new pimples. It takes time to work. Give it about 2-3 weeks. Do not try out new products for another 2-3 weeks until your skin adjusts to Retino-A. If breakouts don’t reduce in 2 weeks, it is possible that Clindac A + Retino-A combination is too harsh for your skin.
Your dermatologist is right, even non-comedogenic sunscreens can sometimes worsen acne. So for the next 2 weeks or so, perhaps try to keep the face covered with a thick light-coloured dupatta / scarf when outdoors (difficult but achievable). I’d say let the acne situation settle down a little bit and then give Suncote Gel a shot. Suncote is often prescribed by dermatologists along with acne medication, so it is fine for use with Retino-A.

    Hello,

My face looks very greasy after applying this. What to do?

Which moisturizer should i use and when also?
Before or after applying the sunscreen?

    • Avatar of AM
      AM May 20, 2013 at 1:16 pm #

If the face looks greasy then you don’t need a moisturizer. Ideally, a moisturizer if needed should be applied after a sunscreen so that the moisturizer does not interfere with the absorption of the sunscreen into the skin. Most sunscreens (chemical sunscreens) work by getting absorbed into the skin and you don’t want to hinder their absorption. Lotus Herbals 3-in-1 Matte Look Sunblock is a matt sunscreen for use when the acne situation is under control.

    • amit May 20, 2013 at 7:06 pm #

So it goes same for sunblocks also?(In case you didn’t mean for sunblocks in last reply)

And also what to do with the greasy look because i don’t want to switch to any other sunscreen till the tube lasts?

    • Avatar of AM
      AM May 21, 2013 at 6:21 am #

Sunscreen is a must especially if you are using any acne treatments or exfoliants such as Glyco 6. Moisturizer is optional, to be used on a need basis. If you were a girl, a light dusting of mattifying powder would have solved the shiny face problem. You could try one thing – skip Suncote for one day and see if your face turns greasy even then. If so, using a face wash such as AHAglow or Keracnyl will help to prevent extra oiliness.

  11. amit May 21, 2013 at 10:49 am #

No no, i am a boy and if i skip Suncote then what would make my face greasy?

I am already using AHAglow and its good.
But as I remain outdoors, I can’t skip the sunscreen part.

    • Avatar of AM
      AM May 21, 2013 at 11:03 am #

Face can become greasy from too much of the sebum from the skin, but AHAglow must be helping with that. You could do this: get Lotus Herbals 3-in-1 Matte Look Sunblock SPF 40 and mix it with Suncote every day until Suncote gets over. After that you can use Lotus Herbals sunscreen alone. If even that doesn’t help, you can use Suncote on the arms and neck and finish it off.

  12. angel May 21, 2013 at 11:35 am #

Hi, even I have been using Suncote gel and the face does become greasy. Which mattifying powder do you suggest ?

    • Avatar of AM
      AM May 21, 2013 at 11:45 am #

Maybelline Dream Matte Powder is a decent choice, but you will need to do touch-ups every few hours. Rimmel Stay Matte is another option. Among mattifying sunscreens apart from Lotus Herbals ones, Vichy Capital Soleil Mattying Face Fluid Dry Touch Spf 50 is a good option for acne prone skin.

    Hi Admin,
i loved ur website. its really very useful.
i am using La Roche-Posay Effaclar Deep Cleansing Foaming Cream for oily acne prone skin and La Roche-Posay Effaclar Astringent Lotion and after that lacto calamine.
my dermatologist asked me to do so.
i have a query. can we use lacto calamine and sunscreen together as i stay usually outdoors due to my job.
After reading all your comments, i think Vichy Capital Soleil Micro-fluid Mat for Face – SPF 50+ will suite me more as compared to suncote gel coz mine skin is very oily

Hi Ravali, welcome to Acne Mantra! Since you’ve read a bit already, you know by now that all of the products you use have to be non-comedogenic for your skin to stop breaking out. I suspect that’s what’s happening in your case, because of lack of knowledge about which products contain pore-clogging ingredients and which ones don’t. From your description, it sounds like the Basic Regimen would be enough for you. Still, do read up more posts and educate yourself. Any quick tips I give you won’t help in the long run unless you take the time to read up the basics. Also, from now on, please post questions under a related post or in the community section. This post is about Suncote Gel, your question totally isn’t. :)

  18. siddharth August 16, 2013 at 2:26 pm #

    Dear writer,
you say that suncote gel is non-comedogenic n safe for acne prone skin , but your android app says that Triethanolamine is a comedogenic substance which is also the containt of suncote gel…please reply.

    • Avatar of AM
      AM August 16, 2013 at 2:48 pm #

Hi Siddharth, triethanolamine is mildly comedogenic, which means for most people it is okay. The app needs to show it as “mildly” comedogenic, I’ll ask our developer to correct it. In the meantime, you could use the online version of the app which always has the latest updates.

    NO.
I have been asking for it since 2 days in every medical shop and they haven’t even heard abt it!
