Alternatives to Lotus Herbals 3-in-1 Matte Look Sunblock?

0

Lately, many people have been reporting breakouts from Lotus Herbals 3-in-1 Matte Sunblock. A lot of the confusion has been because of a highly comedogenic ingredient “isopropyl myristate” being misspelled on the label as “isopropyl myristare”. Because of this, the sunscreen was passing the Skingredients check and giving an impression of being acne-safe.

The finish from this sunscreen is perfect matte, but sooner or later its comedogenic action catches up with your skin – even if you don’t see a full-blown breakout, you will start to notice pimples here and there.

As is my wont, I’ve dug out some more sunscreen options that can be used as alternatives to Matte-but-comedogneic Lotus Herbals and sticky-shiny Suncote.

Proactiv Daily Protection Plus Sunscreen SPF 30 <– passes the check with only a few mildly comedogenic ingredients, mostly matte finish
Kaya Daily Use Sunscreen + with SPF 15 <– full list not available, but tried and tested, gives a dewy finish, not oily
Sebamed Sun Care Multi Protect Lotion SPF 50+ Very High Protection <– for sun worshipers, no highly comedogenic ingredients

Anyone used these? I’ll be updating the regimen posts too with these are alternatives to Lotus Herbals and will not be recommending 3-in-1 Matte anymore, except to APST 1. 🙂

What about Lotus UV Screen Matte GEL SPF 50? Can that not be included as an alternative to Lotus 3 in 1 Matte Look Sunblock ?

Seema, Lotus Herbals UVScreen gel contains ethylhexyl stearate, which although not as strong a pore-clogger as isopropyl myristate (3-in-1 Matte Look), is still comedogenic. So Lotus Herbals UVScreen Gel is a safer choice, but not foolproof.

But Teju Kaya’s SPF is only 15. May not be suitable for summer season. As you know B’lore summer is more or less like Chennai now-a-days.

Hi Sonal,

How about Nivea for Men Advanced Whitening Dark spot SPF30. Ashu had breakout by using this though, so may not be foolproof for APST3. Do you still recommend this? All the alternatives which you have mentioned are expensive.

Suresh, among low cost ones Suncote is the safest. I’m checking out other pharmaceutical sunscreens to see if we have any options there.

I’m still on the fence about Nivea for Men Advanced Whitening Dark spot SPF30, will post about it soon. We might be missing some ingredient in it that is pore-clogging.

There was some talk of Sunheal recently. Wish I could get more info on that… Update: turns out it is a cream based product and may not be non-comedogenic.

The mention of Zoray gel sunscreen has come up a few times too, all good.  Price is Rs. 211 for 60 grams tube. A little review of Zoray Aqua Gel.

Hi Sonal,

Have you heard/used Ansolar daily use gel SPF30?

Thanks angel. That’s very helpful. 🙂 Your link also shows that Suncros is available in gel as well as lotion formula. Some people have reported breakouts with Suncros. It’s quite possible they were using the lotion version. Even the gel version of Sunscros is pretty thick, but.

Pharma sunscreens except Suncote, Suncros and Zoray Aquagel all seem to be cream or lotion formulas. 👿

Thanks Sonal, but I am disappointed. Then there is no sunscreen with matte finish for APST3 which is non-comedogenic. Any how sticking with suncote and the tissue papers.

ha ha Sonal 🙂 I don’t think anyone has tried UV Med yet.. so let me go buy it… and will tell u guys how it went.

Sounds good. So you are the guinea pig, I mean volunteer for Uvmed then. It all looks good so far and given the history of Ethicare gel products with acne prone skin, this sunscreen should be fine. It is tinted, matte, gel – sounds like Ethicare is trying to take Lotus Herbals 3-in-1 Matte Gel tinted sunblock head-on with this one.

Hi Amigos 🙂

After reading this post and the comments i cant stop myself to jump in and share my thoughts 🙂

Me and Sunscreen are never good friends 🙂  What ever sunscreen i used it make my skin oily or leaves white cast. So i stopped using sunscreens.

Then i want to try last chance lotus 3 in 1 ( as i dont have access to suncote).  I used it 4 times today and here is my feedback.

I love this sunscreen. Smell is also good. Doesn’t make skin oily.  Face looks fresh for longer time.  It absorbs quickly.  Till now i dont see any breakouts (Touchwood. Thank god :))

Did i got the best sunscreen of my life :):)

Sunscreen would love to try in future – Suncote  and UV med (Ethicare)

Thanks,

Ashu
