Which is the best toner suitable for acne prone skin in India? Which is the best toner or astringent for oily skin? Which is the best alcohol-free toner for sensitive skin in India? Is rose water a good toner for oily /combination skin? Which toner will help to reduce pore size?

Often toners make big claims but end up doing nothing more than providing temporary hydration. Some contain large amounts of alcohol that can not only dry the skin surface, but also cause it to produce more oil, creating a greasy face. Ask yourself if you really need a toner and if so, for what purpose.

Our top choice of toner for acne prone skin is from a relatively unknown brand in India. It is available in online stores such as healthkart.com and medplusbeauty.com.

Living Proof Multi Action Cell Treatment Toner

What the company says about the toner: Double cleanses. Refines pores. Firms. Regenerates cells. The Treatment Toner combines the skin refining and firming properties of Russian basidiomycete mushrooms and witch hazel. You can feel an instant skin firming sensation that tightens pores. It has anti-aging properties and protects skin from bacterial infection.

The price of Living Proof Multi Action Cell Treatment Toner is Rs. 390 for 150 ml.

Toners known to cause breakouts / are unsuitable for oily skin

– Ayur Herbal Skin Toner (breakouts)
– Aroma Magic Aromatic Skin Toner (breakouts)
– L’Oreal Hydrafresh Instant Freshness Toning Water (breakouts)
– Nivea Visage (breakouts)
– Himalaya Herbals Gentle Refreshing Toner (breakouts)
– Sebamed Clear Face Deep Cleansing Facial Toner (not for oily skin)
– Khadi Cooling Skin Toner (does nothing special)
– Garnier Pure Active Multi-Action Toner (does nothing special)
– Aroma Magic Skin Fresh Lotion (does nothing special)
– Fab India Tea Tree Toner (does nothing special)
– Dabur Gulabari (does nothing special)
– Lush Tea Tree Water (doesn’t work much better than water)

Rose water is often used as a toner, but it doesn’t do much other than moisturize temporarily, because of the highly diluted formulas available in stores.

Hi Tina, welcome to Acne Mantra! I’ve used  Living Proof Multi Action Cell Treatment Toner so I do know it works. I just checked out the ingredients of Kaya Purifying Toner and it looks fine. The niacinamide in it will help you reduce dark spots from acne. Also, mandelic acid is a gentle exfoliant.

I’d say both look good, although the Living Proof one does not provide very good oil control. So if oiliness is a problem, you might stick with Kaya. The Living Proof one is likely a stronger exfoliant, so if you are not happy with the Kaya one, perhaps check out the Living Proof one once you are done with this bottle.

Oh, and if you still experience small breakouts, Living Proof will be better because of its salicylic acid content.

hello everyone.. i was wondering if the Cypress & Witch Hazel Astringent Face Toner by aloe veda would be good for oily skin. the ingredients list given on their website is Aqua, Witch Hazel Extract, Polysorbate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Lemon Extract, Cypress Essential Oil

out of these ingredients no ingredients stands out to be comedogenic when checked in skingredients tool. although i m not sure if it is complete or incomplete list of ingredients.

Hi Deepika, how have you been? 🙂 From these ingredients, I’m not sure about  Cypress Essential Oil. It is an astringent and antiseptic oil and should be fine, but I can’t be sure. The rest of the ingredients seem pretty acne-safe.

Hey AM, When I used to do CTM (a year back) I used Amway’s toner for toning phase. I think I had no pimples as it contained Alcohol. But read side effects of Alcohol if used on face!

Now, can we use any alcohol toner to treat the occasional pimples? I know daily use is not advised but using it seldom like 4-5 days in a month(or 2). What say?

Hi Akshay, alcohol is not such a major culprit as it is made out to be. Alcohol up to around 5-6% does no harm. It evaporates quickly, leaving the active ingredients deposited nicely on the skin. Formulas that don’t list alcohol in the first few ingredients should be okay since that says it is present in a small amount.

Hey AM, itna Fatak se reply? *overwhelmed*

It mentions ethanol as 95% v/v. And that’s pretty much! So, can spot treatment be done using a cotton pad and alcohol toner like Amway’s Attitude toner? (yes, only when pimple is not swollen/open/ruptured!)

Friends,

Just FYI.  “Apple Cider Vinegar” does a very good job as a toner.

Even this famous actress is using it – http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/10/scarlett-johansson-apple-cider-vinegar_n_3051748.html

I also tried it as a toner  last week for 3-4 times. Only problem it is stinky so i stopped and only drinking apple cider vinegar. (Thanks a ton to our AM community member “Rohini” for informing about apple cider vinegar in one of the post )

Hi,

First of all, great work on acne!! 🙂 please tell me where to purchase the suggested living proof toner since it is not available in both the online site you have mentioned. I only have access to online shopping. Thanks a ton!

Don’t go for Living Proof one,I have used it .I highly suspect that it cause me acne though it gives nice glow to skin….(a personal suggestion)

Is the ‘the body shop’ ‘s tea tree toner a good one? i have heard a lot of good reviews on it!

0

@janram, the second ingredient in The Body Shop Tea Tree Toner after water is alcohol. The third is pore-clogging corn starch. The fifth one is castor oil. Unless you don’t break out easily, and have very very oily skin for which you need a high alcohol content to control, you can easily give this toner a skin.

Hi @acshru

I have used Neutrogena Deep Clean Blackhead Eliminating Cooling Toner. I loved it on first few days, almost 1 month. it really effective to eliminate blackheads. skin was clearer after using it. but after 1 month i got many zits on left cheek. so i stopped using it. 🙁 it contain alcohol. that may be the reason.

Hiya @acshru, the ingredient lists of Neutrogena Pore Refining Toner and Neutrogena Deep Clean Blackhead Eliminating Toner are very similar, except for a couple of natural ingredients like cedarwood and peppermint. All the major active ingredients are there in both, even if in slightly altered proportions.

The takeaway is that if pore refining worked for you, deep clean blackhead toner will also work just as well.

Neutrogena Deep Clean Blackhead …

Water, Alcohol Denat, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water, PPG-5-Ceteth-20, Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Sodium PCA, Sodium Hydroxide, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Lactate, Menthyl Lactate, Benzoic Acid, Fragarance, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Cedrus Atlantica Bark Extract.

Neutrogena Pore Refining …

Water, Alcohol Denat. (35%), Glycolic Acid, Witch Hazel (Hamamelis Virginiana) Extract, Sodium Pca, Salicylic Acid, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Extract, Peppermint (Mentha Piperita) Leaf Extract, Allantoin, Sodium Lactate, PEG 40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Fragrance

Don’t go for neutrogena blackhead eliminating toner if you have sensitive skin as it instantly reddens your skin because it contain alcohol. That redness takes too much time to go , same is the case of clinique clarifying lotion 3.But, if you can tolerate the clinique one then you can go with this one.
