@acnemantra @lalitha Does eating nuts like almonds,walnuts cause acne?i am very health conscious and dont indulge in fast food,oily or spicy food…but i do eat some nuts daily…like almonds,walnuts…sometimes date and figs…can these cause acne?
Nuts like almonds, peanuts, cashews, walnuts and pistachios contain something called phytoestrogens. Now regular people with no hormonal imbalance or liver detoxification issues can process them without problems. But in the case of acne prone people, sometimes even small amounts of phytoestrogens can trigger breakouts.
The best way to be sure is to keep an eye on how your skin behaves in the days following nut consumption.
Some of the seeds like flaxseed work the same way. There’s @charlesabraham who broke out from consuming flaxseed oil for his body building. Recently, I tried a spoonful of flaxseed oil for body ache and the very next day I broke out into two huge cysts. Nothing else had changed.
The whole problem is this – what is “healthy” isn’t necessarily “acne-safe”. So while nuts and seeds are healthy, they may not be acne-safe for everyone.

I always felt in my teenage that I got a pimple when I consumed almonds. Everyone laughed at me when I told them about it. As I told you earlier I never had acne my whole life and it started just last year. Just before this “terrible acne bomb” dropping in my life, I had consumed around a Kg of almonds and pistachios each 🙁 🙁 ..

I was turning to ASPT 3 from ASPT 0 when I found u and this website. Now I have stopped it altogether but I think my skin and internal system has not forgotten my “mega nut feast”. 🙁
@shweta, it also depends on how much nuts you eat & if they are flavoured with salt & spices etc. Typically 4 to 5 almonds, 2 to 3 walnuts, about 10 to 12 raisins & 4 to 5 pistachios are generally good for the skin along with an otherwise reasonably healthy diet. If you exceed this, you are creating an Omega 3 imbalance in relation to your omega 6 in your body which is why you would trigger an inflammation internally leading to acne.
Needless to say, all of these nuts need to be unsalted & no extra additives or spices. It could simply be the excess salt & spices in flavoured nuts that could trigger the acne by itself.
Guys, phytoestrogens can be harmful only for those with estrogen dominance. Estrogen dominance is a trigger for acne, but not in everyone. If your acne is a result of this condition (those with PCOS for example), then adding phytoestrogens to your regular diet can tip the balance against you even more. This is why I said that you watch how you personally react to nuts. This will help you determine if you are sensitive to phytoestrogens.

@shweta, No absolutely not! Nuts, Walnuts & almonds especially are very good for the skin as they contain Omega 3 & 6. Nuts or figs as per my knowledge do not contribute to acne. I myself eat nuts every single day always & have not found it be acne causing.
as long as you are avoiding the salted nuts, you are fine 🙂
I too eat Almonds, Pistachios, Cashews and Walnuts daily. It never caused acne.

Ooops that hurt 🙂 I dont eat fruits much..have lil diet..but i do make sure that I eat few nuts daily..now I will have to be careful about what I shud eat and what I shud avoid..thanks @acnemantra for imparting this information to us.
Every one is unique. Different food gives different results depending up on the person. So, its his/her duty to find out what works.

I finished it in 2-3 months. I know a Kg is too much but I was recovering from an injury and had lost too much weight. So that I become healthy soon my loving mom gave me so much to eat. After the acne bombardment, I felt again that may be almonds are the cause so I left the remaining 1 Kg packet of almonds and salted pistachios unopened. It is still with me (since now I away from home) and get scared to touch and see that packet 😛 😀
May be.. May be that was the cause. Not sure..
@sandy lol well i love roasted almonds and keep the jar handy…as i dont indulge into mindless eating,i do pop up 1 2 almonds couple of times a day…but make sure i dont eat more than 12-15….what all we acne prone people have to give up to detect the culprit..milk,nuts…what next? 🙂
I am not sure whether it was 1 Kg or more what I consumed. Since my mom gave me 5-6 in a day (sometimes twice). Pistachios were salted and tasty so I could not resist whenever my sweet mom gave me. 😛

@lalitha if am taking omega 3 fatty acid suppliment and 12 to 15 almonds and 1 walnut…can it affect my acne?
