I’m new to acne mantra. Like most of the people her I was suddenly attacked by acne in my late 20s, before that I had almost clear skin with occasional zits.
About 6-8 months ago I started having cystic acne which was like expected leaving behind dark ugly spots. But before the spots could fade there were new outbreaks and the this became almost a cycle with my every period.
I finally did some research and also went to a derma who prescribed me some antibiotics, a blood purifying tonic, KLM KLIN face wash(2% salicylic acid) and nio clean for spot treatment. I had also just started using aha glow after. Reading so many positive reviews here.
Currently I use aha in morning and klm klin on nights and if needed I use cetaphil during the day. I try to keep my face moisturized but it’s become dark. Initially, say about a month ago I was using ponds age miracle and it was actually working on my dark spots pretty good but now I’m scared to use it with glycolic and salicylic acid.
What can I do and how can I improve my regimen to get my complexion back.
Hi Supreet, you can prevent darkening to a good extent by using a full spectrum sunscreen daily – whether indoors or outdoors. Sunprotek Gel SPF 50+ and Zoray Aquagel SPF 30 are safe options for acne prone skin. Pond’s Age Miracle isn’t a very strong treatment, so if your skin isn’t sensitive (doesn’t get red easily or break out into itchy rashes) you can still use it at night. During the day however, a sunscreen is a must. For a systematic plan to reduce darkening and dark spots, see this 3 step CPP Process.
Thanks for the reply. I wanted to use glomed but before that I thought it would be wise to start with low percentage of glycolic acid. Also glomed’s availability is another issue. Also my skin is not too sensitive but do u think this darkening is due to over exfoliation?? As I mostly stay indoors and my day cream has some amount of spf in it. When I go out I apply sunscreen on top of it.
Kojivit gel- is it only meant for spot treatment or can be used all over the face??
I’m getting married in Two months and hell has broken lose on my face 🙁 I don’t wanna look like the ‘spotted bride’ 🙁
Oral antibiotics can also make skin very sensitive to the sun – you can figure out if that’s the case if you are seeing darkening all over the body that is exposed to the sun. In this case, the darkening may be due to lack of sunscreen because as such you are not using any strong acne treatment all over the face, are you? Which day cream are you using? Is it the same Pond’s Age Miracle one? You need to be sure that none of the products are clogging pores and causing pimples. I take it that Pond’s Age Miracle isn’t causing you pimples? Kojivit can be used all over the face, but it just might be better for now to use it only on spots.
This is the first time I have taken anti biotics and the darkening is not all over the body it’s just the face that had become dark and dull.
No I’m not using any strong treatment. Before my current regimen I was using la roche posay cleanser and effaclar duo cream. Sometimes I would use acnes mentholatum gave wash but no medicated cream or face cleansers as such.
Yes, ponds age miracle both day and night cream. I got it because of the retinol present in it. Yes another reducer that I was using with it was yves rocher elixir 7.9 serum but it was too light in texture.
Then the only reason in your present regimen sounds like the salicylic acid wash. You might try Klim Klin AHA face wash which is 5% glycolic acid and see if that helps. For the night, add in a thorough cleanser like Kaya Skin Clinic Soothing Cleansing Gel.
Also, switching to a higher protection an acne-safe sunscreen like Zoray Aquagel SPF 30 / Sebamed Suncare Spray SPF 30 should help.
It sounds like many of the products you tried in the past were comedogenic and they must have contributed to new acne as well. La Roche Posay Toleriane Cleanser (is this the one you were using?), Effaclar Duo, Pond’s Age Miracle Day and Night are all comedogenic, which if someone is APST 3 (looks like you are) can make the skin a land mine of acne bombs.
Here’s some info that will help you: how to select acne-safe products. Also go over this post and it will help you get clearer about how to tackle the acne situation (more important right now than marks).
You might try AHAglow if you want to use a lower % of GA. It has 1% GA.
