Have you used make-up primers suitable for acne prone skin?

1

Has anybody used a good make-up primer that worked for your acne-prone skin without causing any breakouts? I checked the NYX and Makeup Forever ones on Skingredients and found that they don’t have any acne causing ingredients – but they are quite pricy. I don’t want to spend so much on stuff i’ll use rearely. And MAC one showed 4 mildly comedogenic and 1 highly comedogenic ingredient. Any other suggestions?

I usually don’t apply makeup during the day, but I do sometimes for parties or while going out, which is usually in the evenings. At that time I do not need sunscreen and I feel any kind of moisturiser makes my makeup oily. So for night time makeup, primer is a good solution.

yes primer acts a barrier and make up base..

New questions:

1- Primer goes on the face before or after sunscreen?

2- Are there any acne-safe primers with SPF available in India? (like Mac Prep and Prime – but it has comedogenic ingredients)

Hi Anuja..Sunscreen goes first..Then primer..
Normally primer comes without spf like colorbar..
I feel Make up products with spf tend to give that white powdery effect..

I wish Sephora would come to Bangalore. 🙁

MAC has several primers – and at least one specifically for oily skin prone to break-outs, but I dunno its ingredients.

I’ll try the Colorbar and L’Oreal ones. I was wondering if I would be stuck with the Body Shop Tea Tree Oil primer, and was feeling a bit blue over my lack of choices – this is a great thread. 🙂

Hey, look at The Body Shop Tea Tree Pore minimiser:
Water, Glycerin, Alcohol Denat, Silica, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Isododecane, Fragrance, Talc, Pentylene Glycol, Sodium Polyacrylate, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Bertholletia Excelsa Seed Oil, Caprylyl Glycol, Glyceryl stearate citrate, Phenoxyethanol, Tea tree leaf oil, Calophyllum inophyllum seed oil,
,Xanthan Gum, Epilobium Fleischeri Extract, Disodium EDTA, Limonene, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid, Citral, Leptospermum Petersonii Oil, Tocopherol, Dimethicone/Bis-Isobutyl PPG-20 Crosspolymer…

Glyceryl Stearate is mildly comedogenic
Talc is mildly comedogenic

Not bad? Not bad.

Hiyo!

The exotic oils in The Body Shop Pore Minimizer have sneaked under the Skingredients radar.

Bertholletia Excelsa Seed Oil is Brazil nut oil – no idea if it is non-comeodgenic. It usually gets a mention in dry skin circles.

Tea tree leaf oil – no problems there.

Calophyllum inophyllum seed oil is tamanu oil, a popular natural treatment oil for acne.

Leptospermum Petersonii Oil is lemon tea tree oil, also ok for acne prone skin.

Also tocopherol, depending on the source, swings from not comedogenic at all to severely comedogenic (strange but true).

The main bummer is Brazil nut oil. Any daring souls who may have experimented with it please come forward. 😀

With all these oils, how much of a primer action is one going to see from this product?

While I am on The Body Shop wagon (I’m slowly putting all their attractive face products – Tea Tree Oil, Seaweedrange, makeup, into the Skingredients tool to check them out), I was looking at the ingredients for the Matte It Primer by TBS.

Ingredients:

Cyclomethicone, Polysilicone-11, Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract

Dimethicone is mildly comedogenic

So it falls into safety ranges as well.  TBS UK gives a full list of ingredients, as far as I can make out.

I have used TBS products in the past, and I would rather stay away from them, even when there are no apparently comedogenic ingredients that pop up on skingredient. They are usually super expensive and don’t really do anything for acne-prone skin.

There’s a new Inglot store that has opened in Phoenix Mall (Bangalore) – they also have a makeup primer (Under makeup base) and I checked it out on my hand. Seemed fine, but did not get the complete ingredient list; or maybe this is the complete list: Cyclopentasiloxane, Polysilicone-11, Dimethicone.

Dimethicone is present in all the primers I guess, so cannot do anything about it.

The L’Oreal Studio Secrets primer that I have, works fine so far but is about to get over, also lists just two ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, and Dimethicone.

Hello guys. I bought L’oreal Base Magique Primer. I got a good deal at airport. About Rs.2,000 for two tiny pots. The primer is really good. It does not have any major comedogenic ingredient except dimethicone (which is there is all the primers) – and has a very different consistency. Only a little bit is required and it makes the skin even for make-up application. I am loving it. It keeps the skin matte too.
