Hi AM, I needed some help in understanding how to tag people when you reply to some one’s question. For eg- if there is a new post & I am replying to that post but I also want to tag people concerned to that post so that they can also see my answer? how do I do it? I tried but been unsuccessful so far 🙁
Hiya @lalitha, @kev85, I hear you guys. I have been meaning to post about it for some days, but it just kept slipping out of my mind. Great that you brought it up. I shall put a link to this at the top of the answer box template itself so everyone can see it all the time.
Advantages of tagging people
If you tag someone by mentioning them with an @sign, they will receive an email saying you mentioned them. This is a sure shot way to bring something to someone’s attention, especially if they are not the one who created the thread in the first place. The creator of the thread will receive an email for every reply that is posted on the thread anyway.
Suppose someone posted something, anywhere on this website, in comments, community or reviews section or a blog post. You can acknowledge them by tagging them. Or you can ask them further questions by tagging them.
How to tag someone
When you see someone’s avatar, you see their picture and their display name beside it. So mine shows the picture and my display name “AM”. When you place your mouse over it without clicking it, this is called hovering. When you hover over someone’s avatar, in your browser, at the bottom left, you will see something like:
acnemantra.com/members/preetam or acnemantra.com/members/acnemantra
You can also figure out someone’s username by clicking on the their avatar instead of just hovering over it. When you click the avatar, you will be taken to their profile page, and you guessed it, the URL of it will be something like acnemantra.com/members/preetam or acnemantra.com/members/acnemantra Then you can read the user name from the URL.
Now “AM” is my display name, but “acnemantra” is my username. The username is what you want to use for tagging. To tag me, use @acnemantra, not @AM.
More examples: to tag LD, use @lalitha, not @LD
To tag Kevin, tag @kev85, not @Kev
Have you tagged successfully?
When you have correctly used someone’s username to tag them with it like so, @username, then your post / comment / answer / review will show @username as a blue clickable link. This shows that person is tagged and they have received an email saying you mentioned them.
Public messaging is a type of tagging
If you send a public message to someone, it just means you post an update and they will receive an email. For that, click their avatar to go to their profile. Then click “Public Message” button and write what you want them to know. That will post it on the website publicly, and will also send them an email saying you mentioned them.
Now let’s get tag-happy! 🙂
If someone doesn’t check their email to which tagging notification was sent, all is not lost. The next time they come to the website, they will see a blue circle on the upper right side showing that they have new mentions. So they will still come to know you mentioned them, but just not instantly.
Hi @yogi, the zero on the left side is the score of how helpful an answer is. You can click the up or down arrow to mark it “helpful” or “not helpful”, in which case it will increase to 1 or decrease to -1 respectively. Helpful answers usually get more +1’s so they rise to the top, nearer the question. Similarly, unhelpful or rude answers sink to the bottom because more people give them -1’s.
I think no one gives score now. I am still at 0. 🙁
Yes please. A question that has crossed my mind several times.
The way I do it is, hover hover the name and you will find something like https://acnemantra.com/members/lalitha (in the chrome/FF bottom status bar), so your id would be @lalitha; @kev85 likewise.
Most of the softwares do not take username as tags, they require your registered name.
Edit: I meant hover the mouse over the name. We ought to have answer edit function here.
Hey thanks preetam, Will surely try it though I am not still sure If I have understood you correctly!! 🙂
OK, now this tagging guide appears above the answer box every time.
Awesome … That was quick.
Once again @acnemantra to the rescue.
Awesome, Great info, thanks AM. I did do this earlier but I guess I did not use their username but by the name I knew them by posts. Probably that’s why I was unable to post it correctly.
So @preetam, @acnemantra and @kev85 , all tagged successfully!!
Oh and Now I know why @keepcalmandcureacne did not answer my questions? 🙂 Hey how r u girl, Long time!! I replied to your question to kriya on the moisturizer part for dry peeling skin, check it out!!
If used correctly, tagging works and draws people out like flies to honey. 🙂
@keepcalmandcureacne ‘s is a different case. Most likely, the email address to which the notification email goes isn’t one she checks frequently. Or at all. Tagging isn’t very effective in that case.
Thanks @acnemantra for this new feature.
@acnemantra @lalitha 😛 Hey , *protesting vehemently here* 😛 But it was great to be missed though. 😛 But AM – there`s also a blue notification which comes up at the top right hand corner , to the left of the “howdy *thy name you have self-christened yourself with* ” bar – do people know about that? It also gives you the notifs for friendship requests. So everytime you open up the site – you pretty much can see whoever mentioned your right there…I rely on that heavily. 😛
@acnemantra true that about keepcalm. She replies after a while. Oh wait, does she? No she doesn’t! 😀 😆 Lolzzz! 😀
@akshaykshardul – From now on , I`ll be more regular 😛 Exams came in between. 😛 I shudder to think about the summer months – that`s like breakout fest. phew. *here I am sweating without working out at 13 degrees just thinking about it.* XD
Thank u, Thank u, Thank u
Now I know how to tag others
@lalitha , @acnemantra , @kev85 ,
What this Number Zero represents at left of every reply ??
