Are powder foundations good for acne prone skin? Which is better for acne prone skin, liquid foundation or powder foundation? Is mineral makeup better for acne prone skin?

Can I use Revlon Colorstay Mineral Foundation which is a powder foundation?

Powder foundation and mineral makeup is generally considered suitable for acne prone skin because it is thought that it will sit on top of the skin and won’t get into the pores unlike its liquid counterpart. Mineral makeup is marketed heavily toward sensitive, acne prone skin, but it is not necessarily better.

Not all powder foundations are oil-free and non-comedogenic. Even if a powder foundation is oil-free and claims to be non-comedogenic, it may have ingredients that can irritate the skin. Irritation is a major source of acne.

One such ingredient that is universally present in powder foundations is talc. Talc is mildly comedogenic and can trigger breakouts. Among mineral powder foundations, the culprit is bismuth oxychloride that can cause itching and irritation on sensitive skin. Bismuth oxychloride is used to give a smooth, glowing finish to the skin.

Revlon Colorstay Mineral Foundation is oil-free but not talc-free or bismuth-free. Revlon Colorstay Aqua Mineral Makeup being oil-free, talc-free and bismuth-free and is a safer option for acne prone skin. Revlon Colorstay Aqua has also been reported to have caused acne but quite rarely.

L’Oreal True Match Minerals Foundation has been known to cause breakouts (not bismuth-free). MAX Studio Fix Powder Foundation, although generally considered safe for acne prone skin has been known to cause breakouts.

Its true about l’oreal mineral powder foundation it did actually break me out…I dnt know about powder foundation but as an alternative I hv been using the wet and dry duo compact from the brand make up forever. .its meant for oily to combination skin n provides good coverage even if used alone (yes I hv used it many times without foundation, just on my moisturiser) it stays for a good 4 hours without making my skin oily n patchy and after dat u cn jst wet the sponge n u r fresh n ready again…I dnt know about its price and availability as it was a gift to me from my aunt….i think it might be available online.

The Body Shop Nature’s Minerals Foundation is pretty close to a non-irritating, non-comedogenic mineral foundation – no talc, no bismuth oxychloride and good sun protection even. The powder has micro shimmers that create a glowing effect.

The coverage is minimal and because of this, The Body Shop Minerals Foundation can best be used as a finishing powder rather than a stand alone foundation. But in that case, how much of that mineral goodness is actually coming into contact with the skin? It also does not do a good job of controlling oiliness. In any case, this mineral foundation is one of the “less evil” ones out there.

Clinique Super Balanced Powder Makeup SPF 15 now discontinued, used to be Clinique’s version of mineral makeup. It was one of the moisturizing mineral makeup options, but it did have bismuth oxychloride.

That depends on how acne prone your skin is.

If your skin does not break out easily, and you need a powder foundation solely for controlling oil, Maybelline Dream Matte Powder is a decent choice. Again, it is more of a finishing powder.

For a full-on powder foundation that you can use on its own, try MAC Studio Fix powder foundation. You can go to a MAC store, try it out, leave it on for the rest of the day and see if it causes any breakouts. Studio Fix is usually fine if the skin is not severely acne prone. Studio Fix powder will give you a matte finish.

I have severe acne. Maybelline Dream Mousse Collection is best for my skin, it gives good coverage.
