I’m 29 yrs old with oily skin & have the problem of cystic acne(red bumps). These pimples started @age of 14, I suppose, but have decreased over time. I have been following the AM’s acne regimen for a month. The condition have improved a lot. But the red bumps which I think are cystic acne appear 1-2 in no. every week & they leave such dark spots that is hard to go resulting that I have never seen my face spot less. 🙁 :'(
I have been using the following since a month:
3. Suncote Gel
4. Retino-A 0.025%
5. Aloe Veda Aloe Vera Gel
6. Sebamed Clear Face Gel
7. Glyco 6 &
8. Carofit Ultra
I did not find Sebonac gel in my Locality(West delhi) nor online, so I bought this Retino-A. I must say that, I’m very much impressed with the Acne regimen. No frequent Pimples as such, but I do get 1 or 2 red bumps every week & they stay for atleast 4-5 days & leave such spots that stays for months which is so depressing. I tried Retino-A on these spots but nothing happened. I also applied a dot of AHAGlow face wash on it but it remained as it is. Lastly, I applied a dot of Clean & Clear skin balancing Moisturizer(which contains 2% salicylic acid) but it seems nothing can beat it up.
Can someone please give me some more alternatives to stop these red bumps from appearing & even if they do how to suppress them so that they do not stay for long. I’m really stressed out with such dark spots & red bumps. Please advice….
My suggestion would be to use Retino-A on the spots too and let it take care of them.
If you do want to apply a separate spot treatment, you could use either clindamycin or metrogyl as LD and Tejupriya suggested. Use only the tiniest amount, otherwise you’re going to see further redding.
To make your routine really robust and prevent new breakouts, you should consider switching to Sebamed Cleansing Foam + Kaya Soothing Cleansing Gel.
Sebamed Cleansing Foam + Retino-A will be a good solution to preventing new pimples. If you want to read more about how Sebamed Cleansing Foam works check out the Starter Regimen post.
Hi SK Shah,
One small advice why don’t you ditch Fabindia face wash and try Sebamed cleansing foam. Keep using AHA glow though, it is a pretty good face wash.
Okay, I would think you can cut down on Glyco 6 for a week as you are using 2 very strong products. also I hope you are using Retino A all over face right? & not just on spots? Since how many weeks have you been using retino A? Retino A does bring up some white heads & acne to the fore in the initial 3 to 4 weeks time. After that they would settle down. I am also assuming you are only applying a pea sized amount for the whole face with retino right? because anything more than can irritate your skin irrespective of the precautions you take. I also do think you can cut back on carofit Ultra till the time your acne is under control. It is never a good idea to treat scars/spots when you still have active acne on your face. Cut back both, use just Retino for a week 3 to 4 times , remove Fab India from the list and Clean & Clear as well. Try Clindamycin Gel (Clindac) on active pimples in the morning , let it dry, add your regular sunscreen, nights, wash face, apply sebamed clear gel , leave for 30 min, then apply retino A, that’s it, follow for a week & see, should subside the cysts surely. RETINO A itself is quite good for scars.
okay since you’ve been using it for only 2 weeks, I would think that the bumps you see are only the white heads or reaction to retino A whilst your skin is adjusting to it. rest all your regimen sounds fine. Make sure to use Retino after applying Sebamed clear face gel, wait 30 min & then apply, this will drastically bring down the irritation syndrome of retino A. Clindac or Clear Gel (Clindamycin Phosphate – 1%) will work well to make sure the pimples subside without becoming a pus filled one. I do not know about metrogyl as I’ve not used it. Yes Clindamycin is an anitbiotic & over time, your acne’s resistance to it will decrease, but for now, it should work. I would also advice you to continue using Retino A only on alternate nights for another week & then you can start using it every night. For now, I think you can skip Glyco & carofit for another 2 to 3 weeks easily till your skin adjusts to tretinoin & you will gradually see improvement in scars, acne, everything. you need patience with Retino & it is best used alone & not combined with other products. Typically Tretinoin is a strong treatment by itself to take care of acne, scars, ageing & if at all you need some exfoliation, then you could use a 10 to 12 % glycolic acid cream just once a week. Also for scars, after week 4 of tretinoin when all your bumps/cysts have come down, introduce a pigment reducer or skin lightening gel that you can use in the morning before applying sunscreen. Kaya Pigmentation reducer gel has good reviews here. Hope you got the regimen clearly 🙂 All the best!
Hi SK, your regimen sounds pretty fine. If you are not seeing any skin irritation from combinging AHAGlow + Retino-A + Glyco 6, then you’re on the right track. You might consider adding Baidyanath Rakta Shodhak Bati to your regimen. Quite a few members have started using them recently. Just hit the search button on the right to see all their discussions.
Since it has been one month and you are seeing noticeable difference, I’d say hang on this routine without giving in to the temptation of shaking things up with new products. With regular use of Retino-A based routine, you should see less and less pimples say 3-4 months down the line.
Thirdly, if after 3 months, you do not see a major clearing up, you might want to up the % of Retino-A to 0.05%. This kind of adjustment is best done under a doctor’s guidance.
Keep us posted on how everything goes. We’re here for you every step of the way. I hope you will be have your own success story to share in a couple months’ time. 🙂
Hi AM, definitely, I’m gonna give a try to the “Baidyanath Rakta Shodhak Bati”. hope this works. I would really like to know is there any cream or gel which with dotted application will calm down the red bumps, as I remember some advertisement of magic pens which cools down any pimple long time ago..
Thanks, a lot for your valuable suggestion. 🙂
Hi Skshah..Just dab a little retino for pimple spot treatment..
And CnC contains 0.5% salicylic acid..
Suresh, you read my mind. 🙂
Hi Teju, but as I said in my earlier post that, it didn’t worked..
thanks for the correction about CnC.
Sebamed cleansing foam can help you bring acne under control as it kills thousands of bacteria in 5 minutes..
I just dab little Metrogyl, you can try that if you want..
Thanks Suresh, will do that also. but the hesitation is that its just a bit costly..
U do understand that 🙂
In that case, SK, Suresh’s suggestion of incorporating Sebamed Cleansing Foam in your routine just might work. It is a powerful anti bacterial, but unlike BP etc. it doesn’t cause redness or irritaiton.
Your redness BTW is likely due to irritation from using very strong products. While you are changing things up a bit, how about replacing both your cleansers with Kaya Soothing Cleansing Gel + Sebamed Foam? Kaya is a huge bottle that lasts for 8 months easily. Anyone who has used Sebamed Cleansing Foam has only good things to say about it.
Also, wanted to add one more question sk? Are you using Retino, Glyco & carofit all at the same time? Can you please specify how you are using the above products, whether you r using retino on alternate nights or any other schedule you are following? I think we are missing something here.
I can add something to this discussion if you explain clearly how you are using these & the frequency.
and more thing Skshah, carofit did break me out..So you might check that if the same thing is happening to you..
Ok AM, should i use both Kaya Soothing Cleansing Gel + Sebamed Foam.? alternately…?
Teju, is this the metrogyle gel u mentioned.
Yes Sksshah,it is same thing..It is approximately Rs 40..
hi LD, I’m using Glyco-6 & Retino-A on alternate nights & Carofit only with Glyco 6, that too after an hour or so.
& Teju my skin is fine with Carofit. No problems yet. 🙂
Hi SK, Sebamed Cleansing Foam in the morning since you will be waking up with a more or less clean face (except for Retino-A / Glyco 6), then Kaya Soothing Cleansing in the evening to take off all the sunscreen etc. For more information about using these two things, check out the instructions over at the Starter Regimen post.
Ya I use Retino A all over face. have been using it from 2 weeks. & yes, i got the red bump on forehead.
Removing Fab India and Clean & Clear as well from the list.
Cutting down Glyco 6 & Carofit for few weeks.
Will just Continue with Retino-A, Kaya Skin Clinic Soothing Cleansing Gel, Sebamed Cleansing Foam & Sebamed Clear Face Gel.
Now for active pimples which One should I try Clindamycin Gel (Clindac) or Metrogyl Gel as suggested by Teju. Also I hope these are not the one which becomes inactive after regular use.
Thanks a lotzz every1 for the valuable suggestions. Will get back soon.. 🙂
i just read that u have been using retino a (tretinoin .025%) on ur entire face. Tretinoin .025% even at this concentration it can irritate ur skin and hance ur facing these red bumps.tretinoin is the most potent retinoid and the strongest of the retinoid family.it is a potent irritant.so applying it all over ur face is not a good idea.generally derma recommend to mix tretinoin with hydrocortisone acetate(mild steroid),fluocionole acetonide(moderately potent)or momatasone furoate(potent steroid) to reap the benefits of this retinoid and get away with the side effects .so better avoid it or use it under a derma supervision.
